Lab Animal Care

The Veterinary Service Center (VSC) is a component of the department of Comparative Medicine that oversees all laboratory animal care and use at Stanford University. The VSC is responsible for assuring that all use of animals is humane and complies with all relevant policies and legal requirements. The centralized animal care and use program at Stanford complies with federal, state, and local guidelines for laboratory animal care, and is accredited by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) International.
The information provided here is to benefit the Stanford research community who use animals in teaching and research. We welcome your comments and suggestions. Please contact us for more information on items included on our web site or on any other animal related issue.
Update on Services Provided by the Veterinary Service Center

The Veterinary Service Center offers clinical and laboratory services to investigators in the Stanford biomedical community. The VSC does not currently provide services for laboratory studies that are intended to support applications for research or marketing permits for FDA-regulated products (as described in Title 21, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 58-Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) for Nonclinical Laboratory Studies).
Such studies cannot currently be done on the Stanford campus, and investigators wishing to perform GLP studies will need approval of the APLAC and concurrence of the VSC for use of an approved outside laboratory.

The VSC is a USDA registered, AALAC accredited animal program and the staff is committed to facilitating biomedical research. For consultation, training, and referrals to our network of off-campus contract laboratories which do support GLP studies, or any other related inquires, contact Dr. Sherril Green, the campus Attending Veterinarian, at (650) 723-6113.
